Turning your life around to focus on treatment, life skills,
and wellness is challenging when you don’t have a
stable place to stay.
Single Room
Occupancy (SRO)
hotels are a step up for people who have been sleeping on
the street or in emergency shelters. The SROs provide individuals
most in need with a private room to call their own with
a bed and, most importantly, access to support services provided
on-site.
The Province acquired these 26 SRO hotels to
protect them from redevelopment into more expensive private market
housing. Provincial acquisition presents the opportunity to
renovate and upgrade these SROs to improve living conditions.
Finally, having experienced non-profit operators to
manage the housing and provide on-site support services creates a
‘place of change’ for the people who live
there.
Right now, extensive renovations are in progress at the provincially-owned SRO hotels. Some vacancies are being maintained at SRO hotels in order to facilitate temporary tenant relocations to accommodate the renovation work. It was very important to the Province that no tenants be evicted because of the renovations. For the latest information on the SRO renovations, please subscribe to the Vancouver Housing Upddate.
