The
Aboriginal
Housing Initiative (AHI)
is part of the Province's commitment to assist
the 30 per cent of Aboriginal families living off-reserve in
inadequate or unaffordable housing. The program provides funding to
develop new, affordable housing for Aboriginal people living
off-reserve, meeting the long-term Aboriginal housing need.
Through the Aboriginal Housing Initiative, the Province is
developing approximately 200 new affordable housing units for
Aboriginal people living off reserve. This program is funded in
part by a one-time grant of $50.9 million through the
Off-Reserve Aboriginal Housing Trust. The trust was transferred
from the Government of Canada to the Province, which is
administering it in consultation with the
Aboriginal Housing Management
Association.
AHI is funding new Aboriginal housing developments in
communities throughout British Columbia. The sites will address a
range of Aboriginal housing needs and priorities including youth,
women, elders, and people with alcohol and drug addictions.
