Breaking the cycle of Homelessness

The Province is partnering with the City of Vancouver to develop new social and supportive housing.

Partnership; land; funding; experience. That's what the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, and non-profit housing providers bring to the table for 14 new supportive housing sites now in the development stages in Vancouver, including five in the Downtown Eastside. Each will provide studio apartments and offer integrated support services for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Why build new supportive housing?

  • These 14 sites will help formerly homeless people move further along the housing continuum towards greater independence.
  • They will offer residents self-contained units with kitchenettes and private bathroom.
  • Non-profit operators will provide support services to tenants as well as to other disadvantaged people in the community.
The Province will pay all the costs to design the new housing developments through to the issuing of development and building permits. These include fees for architects and consultants, permit fees, legal costs and survey and engineering costs.

The City of Vancouver will lease the sites to the Province, through  Provincial Rental Housing Corporation (PRHC) , for a nominal fee for a 60 year period.  The Province will then enter into operator agreements with non-profit societies.

The local government partnerships chart summarizes the number of new units and operators, selected through a proposal call, for the social and supportive housing developments. The total number of units in each development is approximate only, and is likely to change through the design and development process.
