A Year on the Downtown Eastside in Pictures
In February 2009, three of Vancouver's major
media outlets began Operation Phoenix, a project focused on
bringing attention to issues facing people who live in the Downtown
Eastside, one of Canada's poorest neighbourhoods.
The Province newspaper, Global B.C. television and radio
station CKNW worked to shine a light on the issues facing our most
vulnerable citizens. Goals of the project included exposing what
wasn't working, celebrating the things that are and provoking
debate about what needs to happen to improve life here.
Stories
have exposed the tragic realities of life on the streets
and looked at many issues including homelessness, mental illness
and drug addiction. They have also celebrated unsung heroes in the
community who are making a difference and looked at positive
changes under way in the neighbourhood.
Through photographs and interviews, the project
has humanized those who lives in this vibrant and complex place.
The purpose of Operation Phoenix has been to help renew hope in the
Downtown Eastside - to be an agent of change. People from all walks
of life have been asked what needs to change to improve life in the
neighbourhood.
